We are looking for a Senior AI Engineer to own and build Calcs.com’s customer-facing AI systems. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role focused on shipping reliable AI in a high-stakes engineering domain where correctness, traceability, and trust are non-negotiable.
At Calcs.com, we are building the future of engineering design. Structural engineers use our platform to design real buildings, and the AI you build will directly influence how those designs are created, checked, and trusted.
Calcs.com is transforming how engineers work, replacing fragile spreadsheets and disconnected tools with a modern, standards-driven platform. Thousands of engineers across North America and Australia rely on us to power tens of thousands of projects each year. With strong product-led growth, expanding enterprise adoption, and deep industry partnerships, we are entering our next phase of scale.
This is not a standard AI role.
You will own the design, implementation, and evolution of our customer-facing AI experience. We are not building AI that guesses, we are building AI that engineers can trust. That means grounding every answer in verified engineering standards (AISC, ACI) and our proprietary calculation engine, with clear traceability and justification.
You will work at the intersection of AI, product, and engineering judgement: standards Q&A with citations, connection recommendations backed by code logic, and extracting structured data from real engineering drawings. You will collaborate closely with our data team and work directly with 10+ in-house structural engineers for domain expertise.
We care more about what you have built and owned than where you have worked. If you have shipped real AI systems into production and take responsibility for their correctness and impact, we want to meet you.
What you will do
- Own Calcs.com’s customer-facing AI systems end-to-end
- Build standards-based Q&A experiences that return accurate answers with explicit clause citations
- Ship AI-driven connection recommendations, providing ranked options with code-based justification
- Design and improve document and drawing understanding pipelines for real structural drawings
- Build and maintain evaluation frameworks to measure accuracy, coverage, and regressions
- Curate and label training data for multimodal and document AI models
- Investigate incorrect or low-confidence answers and improve the underlying retrieval, data, or logic
- Work closely with structural engineers to encode domain knowledge into reliable AI workflows
- Make pragmatic engineering trade-offs in a regulated, high-stakes environment
If we had worked together for the last 6 weeks, you would have
- Worked directly with structural engineers to understand how standards are applied in real projects
- Traced a user-reported incorrect answer to its root cause and fixed it
- Shipped an improvement to standards Q&A accuracy or citation reliability
- Built or refined an evaluation benchmark to catch a class of failures pre-release
- Improved a document or drawing extraction workflow to handle real-world variability
- Increased trust and transparency in how AI answers are presented to users
What you will need
- 3–5+ years building ML/AI systems in production environments
- Strong experience with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems
- Experience with document understanding, OCR, or multimodal extraction
- An evaluation-first mindset, you measure correctness before shipping
- Product awareness: you care how engineers experience and trust the system
- Comfort working in ambiguous problem spaces and owning outcomes
- Sufficient technical depth to work across data, models, and application layers
Nice to have (but not required):
- Structural or civil engineering background
- Experience working with engineering standards or codes
- Knowledge graphs, Cypher queries
- Experience in regulated or high-stakes domains (engineering, medical, legal, finance)
Why Calcs.com
Engineering and construction shape the world around us, yet many engineers still rely on brittle workflows and manual standards lookups. This creates inefficiency, risk, and frustration. We exist to fix that.
Calcs.com is trusted by thousands of engineers, and we are building the next generation of engineering design tools — faster, safer, more collaborative, and increasingly powered by AI that engineers can rely on.
This work is challenging. Standards are complex, regional differences matter, and correctness is non-negotiable. But our team is exceptional, and you will work with people who care deeply about doing things properly.
We value ownership, autonomy, and outcomes over process. Everyone contributes, whether that means shipping a major system or fixing something unglamorous that users rely on.
